Sophie Gent, violin

Sophie Gent, born in Perth, Australia, studied classical violin in her hometown with Paul Wright at the University of Western Australia, then furthered her Baroque violin skills with Ryo Terakado in The Hague between 1999 and 2005.

In 2002, she and her ensemble “Quartett Opera Quarta” won first prizes at the International Van Wassenaer Competition and the Premio Bonporti international competition in Rovereto.

Since then, Sophie Gent has been active as a soloist and chamber musician, notably with ensembles such as the Ricercar Consort, Il Gardellino and Ensemble Jupiter. She is also a member of the “Mito Dell’arco” string quartet in Japan and concertmaster of the Canadian-based Ensemble Masques.

From 2007 to 2014, she played on a 1732 Gennaro Gagliano violin on loan from the Jumpstart Junior Foundation. Since 2014, she has been playing on a 1676 Jakob Stainer. Professor of Baroque violin at the Amsterdam Conservatory from 2011 to 2014, she currently teaches at the Boulogne-Billancourt Conservatory.
