It was on the occasion of the official inauguration of the renovated Ancien Manège, in September 1994, that I organized my very first concert in a radiant inner courtyard. If it hadn’t been for the relentless efforts of a group of enthusiasts under the presidency of Michel Nicolet, the building, now the pride of the town of La Chaux-de-Fonds, would have become… a parking lot! Many thanks to them.
The musical part of the festivities featured pianist Catherine Courvoisier and cellist François Abeille, then teachers at the Conservatoire de Musique de La Chaux-de-Fonds, as was Jorge Pepi-Alós, who introduced me to Edith Fischer.
These were the foundation stones of an event that was to give a decisive impetus to my activity: the complete Beethoven piano sonatas by Edith Fischer, an exceptional musician and Beethovenian. The cycle was performed in eight concerts during the 1995/96 season, at the Salle de Musique de La Chaux-de-Fonds, in Barcelona and in Vienna. The challenge was great, and the success was overwhelming.
My heartfelt thanks go to the artists, audiences and partners who, among so many others, have since placed their trust in me.
On behalf of the Perspectives Musiques committee, I’d also like to thank the Conservatoire de musique neuchâtelois for hosting us, and its director Nicolas Farine, who was one of the original artists, along with Ariane Haering, Marc Pantillon and Olivier Sörensen.
Edith Fischer is animated with immense talent, great humanity and exceptional artistic longevity. For both Perspectives Musiques and the town of La Chaux-de-Fonds, her visit represents a rare privilege and a great honor.
With a surge of feelings,
Frédéric Eggimann
